Copper Etching in Action

Copper Etching in Action

We love copper! Even the etching process produces beautiful results. The colors and patterns are surprising and wonderful—deep purples, turquoise, green, orange—and patterns like fractals and crystallization occur naturally and randomly. The process involves creating an electrical current between two pieces of copper—the Touchstone in raw form (positive lead or cathode), and a separate copper element (negative lead or anode). These two pieces are submerged in a salt water bath, with a splash of vinegar for flavor! The electrical current causes a reaction that removes copper from the raw Touchstone according to whatever design is applied. (We'll cover the design process in another post.) Part intention, part method and part surprise!
